The Tales of Mike Brown and His Poem

This is not a post to make you hate the police. This is not a post for you to begin to empathize with the African Americans here in this country. This is information for you to put your own pieces of the puzzle together and make your own judgements. It is my job to inform you of the details of these hash tags that many of you have seen floating about. From Face book, to Instagram, and Twitter. There are names that have been called out to your attention. Yet, many of you do not bother to look up the cause. In this world we go by what our cousin's friend told us as opposed to just looking it up for ourselves. So I'll make life easier on you, I'll give you the facts and the stories about the poor tale of Michael Brown. But it is your job to continue this to spread this information because the only way to fix a problem is to have knowledge.

For those of you that do not know, Michael Brown is the African American man that was shot by a police officer on August 29, 2014. While there are claims that there may have been a argument between the two; he was unarmed. A threat to no one. Yet, it was because of these "aggressive" actions that his life was cut short. It was as Brown ran away from the officer that he was shot. At least this is the most common told story and the one that was caught on video. However, there are a few witness comments that you can find here. Seeing how the saying goes, there are always three sides to a story. Your side. Their side. And the truth. And this is the way for you to form your own truth about the situation.

How would you feel if your brethren were shot by an officer and you heard about a poem using his autopsy as a poem? There is a poet by the name Kenneth Goldsmith that used the autopsy from Michael Brown's death as a means of poetry. Never mind the fact that this was a thirty minute long poem that undermined his death. It also went onto display a completely twisted version of this mans death. Which he chose to display at a conference in the white house. This was a controversy that spilled in to the arms of Twitter and led to a scolding tsk from all of the users that managed to hear about Kenneth's poem. Yet he believed that he had a reason to. Which is why he had so many papers that went on to publish his defense. In his mind he had done no wrong. It was not the first time that he managed to use someones untimely death as a means of "uncreative, creative writing." He says that all he did was read pubic records, and that he did not mean to symbolize a white man praising the gift of a black mans death.
Unfortunately for him, many people did not believe nor could they come to grasp with the ideas that he held. So to apologize he donated money to the brown family. For more information on the misfortunate poem of Mike Brown's death please click here.

  1. Jamirah,

I appreciate you taking a strong stance on this important issue. There are many different view points and opinions regarding the death of Micheal Brown which all hold a certain validity. To say that any one point holds all of the truth would be rather ignorant. I look forward to learning more about this pressing topic.
